Electric Motorbike and Electric Scooter Licence Guide
To align electric motorbikes and electric scooters to their petrol equivalents the government has aligned the kW of the motors to the cc (cubic capacity) of a petrol motorbike.
Licence Category: AM | (EU vehicle category L1e)
Continuous power up to 4kW | 50cc petrol equivalent
Requirements:
- Can be ridden by 16 year olds with a provisional licence and a CBT
- A rider with a full car licence issued after 01/02/2001 and a CBT
- A rider with a full car licence issued before 01/02/2001
- A rider with a motorcycle licence
- (L plates must be displayed until motorcycle test past)
- (Passangers can't be carried until motorcycle test has been past)
Licence Category: A1 | (EU vehicle category L3e)
Continuous power up to 11kW | 125cc petrol equivalent
Requirements:
- Can be ridden from the age of 17 with a provisional licence and a CBT
- A rider with a full car licence issued after 01/02/2001 and a CBT
- A rider with an A1 or A2 or A motorcycle licence
- (L plates must be displayed until motorcycle test past)
- (Passengers can't be carried until motorcycle test has been past)
Licence Category: A2
Continuous power from 11kW to 35kW
- Can be ridden from the age of 19
- Must have held an A1 licence for 2 years

or if 19 or older you can take the Direct Access route by completing your CBT and passing your theory test and practical tests
Licence Category: A
Continuous power over 35kW
- Aged 21 or over, can ride any motorcycle
- Must have held an A2 licence for 2 years
- or if 24 or over you can take the Direct Access route by completing CBT, theory tests and a practical test
Other Requirements:
- Electric motorbikes must also be registered with the DVLA
- Electric motorbikes must also display number plates
- Electric motorbikes must also have a valid MOT once 3 years old
- Electric motorbikes must also have insurance
